Neuro Linguistic Programming
(NLP)
What can NLP do?
This is like asking “What can a hammer, a saw and a screwdriver
do?”! NLP is a set of tools for the mind. The processes
can be used alone or combined with others and the skill in
applying the techniques comes from gaining a full understanding
of the problem. It’s main attraction is that there is
no need to trawl through past distressing events in any depth,
and resolution is generally achieved between one and four sessions.
The methods work at an unconscious level but require a less
formal state of trance. Change is instant. NLP works particularly
well with conditions like phobias, making life changes,
radical behaviour changes. NLP also works excellently to increase your own inner resources
- that is, it can help you to:
-
Raise your levels of self-esteem and sense of Self
-
Stop the discomfort of others "pushing your buttons"
-
Improve your capacity to say "No!" - without
guilt or concern
- Increase confidence levels and your ability to be pleasantly
assertive
-
Enable and empower you to deal with "other people's opinions" -
especially when they are telling you who you should
be or how you ought to behave!
- Help you to be a better communicator with yourself and others
Neuro Linguistic Programming - its basic components
"Neuro" refers to the nervous system and its connections
between brain, body, emotions, movement,
behaviour.... and all aspects of us being human
"Linguistic" refers to the affect
language has on us - the words said by other to us, words we
say "in our head" (as
our brain provides a running commentary)
and words we use in everyday speech to describe ourselves,
situations and our "world"
"Programming" refers to the mental programmes and
patterns we operate, out of our awareness,
as we live day to day
Put all three together and you have NLP -
the way in which language and the
nervous system
work together
to influence
our mental patterns and programmes.
It was originally developed to enable people
to excel
at what they
could do with average
competence. However, the techniques
and processes have evolved over time to help
people change
unhelpful/unwanted memories,
behaviours and reactions so that
they feel more in
control and much more comfortable
with who they are, as well
as how they respond and behave.
At Master practitioner level,
NLP becomes an art. It is more "craftsman" than "joiner".
Understanding The Brain
NLP is a base of knowledge
and understanding of how
the brain
works to promote
different behaviours, changes
in physiology
and thought processes -
together with tools (in the form
of mental exercises and
specific procedures) to
literally CHANGE
YOUR MIND.
When people do something
different they often
say "Oh
I changed my mind" - and that's
exactly what they have done!
NLP provides a means
to instant, positive
change
when you
are stuck in behaviours,
situations
or states of
health
that are
unwanted.
Bodymind Clinic and
NLP
At bodymind we use
NLP as a stand
alone (perhaps
to
resolve
phobias
or to deal
with negative
emotions from
specific
memories) and also
combined with hypnotherapy
for
more complex
issues.
Using NLP techniques
and tools requires
a less formal
state
of trance, providing
a
two-way
process whereby
the therapist
leads the client
to their solution
rather
than
providing a solution.
NLP also provides
an understanding
of communication
which
is invaluable
in teaching
clients how to handle
stressful/difficult
situations
and how to manage
people
more effectively
- thus getting
more of what
you want from
life!
