Clinic Casebook
People often ask “What kind of things
do you do?” or “What do you treat?” The
short answer is ‘Whatever clients present
us with!’ -
we will work with whatever clients bring to us and will refer
to other professionals when appropriate.
In terms of the Bodywork we do, we have over 600 clients
registered with us and have resolved countless muscular conditions,
including: sciatica, tennis/golfers’ elbow, frozen
shoulders and whiplash injuries, resolving general joint
and muscle pain both sports and non-sport related.
To give you a flavour of the wider range of issues we have
successfully managed using a combination of the treatments
we offer, we have put together below a few brief case files
we've worked on with clients.
Effects of Dystonia...
Miss H, a lady in her early 30s, came to us asking if we
could improve her self confidence and reduce the effects
of the symptoms of Dystonia that she was experiencing.
She was keen to get a place at University and felt her
symptoms
would hinder her; she wanted to change her perceptions
of what others thought of her and, on a practical level,
to
be more comfortable using the phone.
Dystonia is considered “a neurological movement disorder”.
Improper signalling from the brain causes muscles to tighten
and twist involuntarily, often forcing the body into awkward
movements and positions. The precise biochemical process
in the body that triggers symptoms of Dystonia is unknown
and it can affect men, women and children of all ages and
backgrounds.
Miss H’s symptoms were a noticeable tremor in her
voice, which had then developed into spasms in the larynx
and muscles in one side of her neck. Conventional treatment
comprised 6-weekly botox injections into her vocal chords-
results were “a bit hit & miss”. She was
convinced that the problem was “hugely psychological” and
rooted in several seriously stressful events earlier in her
life, so we agreed to 4 treatments on a weekly basis using
a mixture of NLP and Clinical Hypnosis.
After only one session, Miss H reported being more confident
using the telephone and success at an interview she had attended
the following day. Four weeks later when Miss H went for
her injection the neurologist asked what she had been doing
- her voice, when tested, was as strong prior to treatment
as it usually was after the injection. Miss H’s confidence
levels have improved; she notices the symptoms less and has
indeed gained her place at University, her ultimate goal.
Fear of Flying...
Mr M, a gentleman in his 70s, wanted to attend his granddaughter’s
confirmation in Ireland but an increasing panic whenever
he thought of flying seemed to prevent the likelihood of
this happening. Driving wasn’t an option.
He returned home after his session of NLP and two days later
telephoned his daughter to book the flights! He has since
comfortably travelled to Ireland several times.
Subsequently, we have also worked with his wife who wanted
to lose some weight and become more active. After 3 sessions
of NLP and Nutrition advice, carefully following our programme,
she too is maintaining a steady weight loss and speaks highly
of her new-found energy levels.
Fear of Putting in contact lenses and other eye-related issues...
We have helped several clients experiencing difficulties
with putting in contact lenses and also a young boy of
9 years old who had lost one of his eyes. The eye had
been
surgically removed and the doctors had given him a glass
replacement but he just could not, no matter how hard he
tried, place it into the socket or take it out. He also
refused to let anyone else touch it.
Because months had passed and it was imperative he start
using the replacement “cell” or the space would
close up, his father brought him to us. The doctors had suggested
hypnotherapy as a last resort.
Happily, after five sessions, he was able to both insert
and remove the cell with confidence.
Effects of Blushing....
Miss M, a young woman in her early 20s, wanted to be blush-free
and mentally focused when presenting to a group of people.
This talented musician was due to present a project in
Europe and wanted to be comfortable doing so without
the symptoms
of blushing which she found distracting.
As time and funds were limited, we agreed to 2 sessions
of NLP. She reported improvement after the first session
and was able to highlight more precisely the issues which
needed to be addressed at the second session to restore her
levels of comfort.
Following treatment Miss M said she felt able to comfortably
plan her presentation knowing she would be relaxed and focused.
Effects of Psoriasis...
Mrs G, a lady in her early 50s, had suffered with psoriasis
for over 20 years and it had become progressively worst,
flaring up more when she was stressed and anxious. We took
the approach that often a major stressful event can produce
physical symptoms in the same way as a phobia (where the
result is a behaviour) is created, a kind of “physical
phobia”
Mrs G had four sessions of NLP/Hypnosis which reduced her
psoriasis, increased her confidence and gave her the means
to control her stress levels in the future. She reported
that not only had the physical symptoms 90% cleared, she
felt better in herself and was more effective as a manager
at work.
Effects of a cerebral virus...
Christine came to us some months after a cerebral virus
had left her limbs paralysed. Although conventional treatment
had helped her regain use of her legs and right arm, her
left arm remained uncontrollable. Christine had experienced
massage whilst attending a workshop in Wales and came to
us as she was impressed with the results.
We used a combination of Sports and Chinese massage, two
therapists working simultaneously to overload her nervous
system to encourage both the restoration of “sleeping” neural
connections and the formation of new ones. The deep pressure
utilised in both styles of massage effectively stimulated
her muscles and there were added benefits to the system of
meridians via the Chinese massage techniques. Christine was
also given exercises to do at home - which she did religiously!
After eight weekly sessions, with small improvements apparent
each week, Christine is now back at work part time. She has
more control over her limbs and her confidence has increased
accordingly.
